Types Of Implant Supported Overdentures

1. Implant-Retained, Gum Supported

With this treatment, the overdenture rests directly on your gums and is retained by implants placed into your upper and/or lower jaw. The overdenture, which is removable, is secured to your implants through retentive attachments incorporated into the denture. Implant-retained tissue supported dentures are currently recognized as the minimum standard of care for fully edentulous patients.

2. Bar-Retained, Implant Supported

With this treatment, the overdenture engages retentive attachments on a metal bar that connects to implants, which are placed into your upper and/or lower jaw. The overdenture, which is removable, is secured to the bar through attachments fabricated directly into the denture.

3. Permanently Fixed, Implant Supported

With this treatment, the overdenture and bar are a one-piece framework secured using screws to implants placed into your upper and/or lower jaw. The overdenture is only removable by a Dental Clinician and is the most like natural teeth due to not having flanges and not resting on the gums.

Overdenture

Implant Supported Overdenture Benefits

People who are missing several or all of their teeth typically have partial or complete dentures; this treatment option is called Overdentures.

Overdentures are replacement teeth secured in place by dental implants. Overdentures were developed to help both partial and fully edentulous (missing teeth) patients regain the quality of life, confidence and functionality that is often compromised in the event of tooth loss .

PROMOTES BETTER DIGESTION:
Poor fitting dentures are often kept in place by using adhesives. Overdentures utilize dental implants, which serve as permanent surgically placed anchors that are more stable than adhesives. This enhanced stability allows you to chew food more thoroughly, which helps you to digest your food more efficiently, and obtain more nutrients.

SLOWS BONE LOSS BY STIMULATING THE BONE IN YOUR JAW:
Whether your overdenture is secured by remaining natural teeth or by dental implants, your jaw bone wil still recieve stimulation when you eat and chew. This stimulation will delay or even halt the resorption (shrinkage) process that would otherwise occur when teeth are missing.

HELPS RETAIN YOUR FACIAL FEATURES AND STRUCTURE:
The natural process of resorption (shrinkage) that results when you have an unhealthy or under-stimulated jaw caused by missing teeth can, throughout time, cause the distance between your nose and your chin to reduce. Your teeth and jaw bone tissue provide support for your facial features. When teeth are missing and bone tissue is lost, it can make your face appear “sunken-in” and prematurely aged.

DENTURES WORN ON THE UPPER AND LOWER JAW ARE MORE COMFORTABLE:
When your overdenture is secured with implants, it is more stable than one held in with only adhesives. This fit also improves the stability of the overdenture by decreasing or even eliminating, unnecessary movement while chewing and speaking. This lessens the possibilty of embarrassing dislodgement in public.
